Royal Academy of Arts - Sackler Galleries - mechanical services upgrade

3rd Jun 2013

H&C Contracts are very proud to have just completed a £1,000,000 replacement and upgrade of The Sackler Wing of Galleries’ mechanical services.

The work involved the replacement of twenty year old packaged air handling units with six new Dalair air handling units as well as the provision of six new Hitachi chillers with remote Guntner adiabatic condensers. The new chillers provide central cooling to The Sackler Wing and other areas. They have replaced two old chillers which were at the end of their useful life. It is notable that both of the old chillers were also installed by H&C Contracts many years ago. Under the contract we also installed new humidifiers, RO units and BMS controls.

The plant has been installed in a new purpose made plantroom built by Sykes & Son above the roof of The Sackler Wing of Galleries’ reception area and was designed to be sensitive to the 1990 Norman Foster glass and steel structure above which it stands.

The mechanical systems were designed by Peter Deer Associates consultants and incorporated energy saving ideas as used in other galleries at the Royal Academy of Arts in recent years.

H&C Contracts are proud to have been associated with the Royal Academy of Arts for twenty two years during which most of their air conditioning plant has been replaced and upgraded by H&C Contracts. This has ensured that the galleries maintain the very closely defined temperature and humidity margins that are required for to ensure that the artwork does not degrade in any way.
